PSHE

At Forefield Community Infant and Nursery School we deliver a high quality PSHE education that helps children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.  We aim to develop qualities and attributes that our children need to thrive as individuals, as family members and members of society and we do this through an ambitious curriculum which challenges and develops children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development whilst supporting and promoting children’s wellbeing.

Intent

At Forefield Community Infant and Nursery School we aim to deliver a PSHE curriculum that will equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives whilst challenging their thinking and understanding.

Our ambitious curriculum enables children to recognise, accept and share their identities and understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings. Our curriculum supports children to be enterprising in order to make effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and achieve economic wellbeing. Children are provided with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and how to make informed choices. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. Our children are supported to develop their understanding of themselves, develop empathy and enjoy and manage their own lives. Consequently children will become happy, respectful, independent and responsible members of society and develop the qualities and attributes they need to thrive as successful individuals, family members and members of society.

Implementation

We teach PSHE through a scheme called ‘1 decision’ that has been reassuringly accredited with the ‘Quality Assured Kitemark’ and we also supplement this with other resources to ensure a balanced and broad curriculum.

1 decision is an interactive platform that uses a mixture of resources incorporating visual, auditory and kinaesthetic teaching approaches. The programme comprises a unique core of video scenarios which are introduced by Deedee (our PSHE mascot) that the children watch as a class or within a group. Each clip has two alternative endings that are designed to stimulate high level discussions around making both right and wrong choices. These activities are followed up by a range of enjoyable activities.

We also take part in whole school themed weeks such as Anti-bullying week, enterprise week and Thankfulness, to name a few, to develop other key knowledge understanding and skills.
